PLAYOFFS

NBA Playoffs and news

This is an open thread for the NBA Playoffs, including the two Game 7s this Sunday and the upcoming Conference Finals. All NBA fans rec this so it stays up for the next two weeks of games.

Houston-LA: All odds are the Lakers win Game 7 by 35 and move on to play Denver. Despite the two blowout losses in Houston I'm still not terribly concerned that the Lakers will lose...yet. They win the games they need to win and then proceed to not show up for lose the rest.

Why the Lakers decided it was a good idea to take jump shot after jump shot with 7 footers Gasol and Bynum having a four to six inch height advantage on Luis Scola, Chuck Hayes and Carl Landry is beyond me. Derek Fisher not hitting 3s is acceptable; taking SEVEN of them is not. Kobe tried to play hero again Thursday, and came up short. I'm not even an LA fan (furthest from it), and even I'm pissed at the way they play. Their effort is not there, and you wonder if it's ever going to show up.

This is a lovable, scrappy Rockets team (Aaron Brooks and his fine red suit are doing wonders, Battier's defense has kept Kobe at bay for three of the six games, but it's doubtful they can translate their great efforts to a winner-take-all Game 7. Artest is a great defender and has kept Lamar Odom from imposing his will, but he balances that out with some questionable shot selection and overdribbling on offense. Houston played great basketball in the first half of Game 6 and still nearly blew it in the third quarter with LA playing like absolute crap for the majority of the game (down 17-1, never taking a lead).

If LA comes out weak though...

Boston-Orlando: This series should be over. The Magic should have won at least one of Games 4 and 5 (certainly Game 5, an epic gag this side of my C-Webb's Kings). Boston should have closed things out tonight. But each team's inability to finish off a team when they're down cancels out the other, and here we are at Game 7. Champs don't go out easy.

Dwight Howard's post game is lamentable; Kendrick Perkins has battled him to a standstill. JJ Redick may be playing good defense on Ray Allen, but the Dukie should be sent to prison for continuing to clang 3s as a starter. Paul Pierce has been on and off, as has Rondo (although there are still flashes of brilliance). Hedo looks done, Alston is still too streetball. No one on Boston has played consistently well (and I doubt they'll play particularly well the rest of the Playoffs), but neither has Orlando (except for maybe Rashard Lewis).

Although this series hasn't been played very well, it's been exceptionally dramatic, and I can't imagine Game 7 disappointing.

Denver: Things did not end well for Dallas, despite Dirk mad balling against Melo and Josh Howard cringing along on two bad ankles. Jason Kidd has forks sticking out of his back (he was passing up LAYUPS), JR Smith and Kenyon Martin aren't playing like headcases, Birdman has suddenly become a redemption story (still not sure if he isn't doping it up), and Carmelo has finally evolved into that pure scorer that most basketball people saw as his ultimate destiny in the league. This team is dangerous and not to be overlooked next round.

He was as smart back then as he is right now.

Cleveland: Cruising to the Finals. Neither of those two schizo East teams should present much of a challenge in the last round. Maybe they'll lose once, maybe twice. But if Lebron is going to face a challenge it'll come from the West.

what do yo think?????????

On Thursday, the defending champion Boston Celtics travel to Chicago to take on the Chicago Bulls in a pivotal game three. The key to the Bulls success will be determined by how they play this game, if they are tentative and lack the killer instinct, they will get crushed. They must make game three a statement game. The hustle points are obviously going to be key, but the Bulls need to play to their strengths and the Celtics weaknesses. They were huge underdogs in the series going in, but played the Celtics even in both games at Boston. Either team could be up 2-0 at this point. The Bulls need to take the ball to the rack and benefit from the home-court advantage, as Boston is a little banged up down low, with Kevin Garnett out and now Leon Powe also out for the play-offs.

For the Bulls, It all starts with Derrick Rose running the show and taking the ball deep into the paint. Rondo can’t handle him and seems to be getting muscled off the ball. Rose needs to go to the hoop early and either draw the foul, score, or look for dump offs to Noah and Thomas, or the kick-out to Gordon and Hinrich on the perimeter.

The Bulls outside shooting game has been a big part of their offense the past few years, but in order to set that up, they need to take it to Boston early in game three, in order to get them into the penalty early and foul trouble later. Referees tend to favor the more aggressive team in the play-offs, especially home teams. Now everyone knows the Bulls need a big game from Rose, but another player that could come up big is John Salmons.

Salmons is a big guard who knows how to score, and is one of the most underrated players in the league. Jerry Reinsdorf has got to love this guy; he scored 18 points a game shooting 47% from the floor, 41% from the three and 84% from the free throw line, and only makes 5 million a year! To top it all off, he’s signed through 2011. I see John Salmons as the breakout player for the Bulls on Thursday.

In the first two games of the series, Salmons hasn’t shot the ball well. He’s 12-33 in the series and that’s just not his game. He’s a better player then that. In game three, he needs to take the ball to the hoop with a vengeance. The Bull can’t make this or any other series an outside shooting affair. That approach will only get you so far, they need to get after it offensively and go right at the teeth of the Boston defense. Kendrick Perkins can block a few shots, but Big Baby and Mikki Moore aren’t shot blockers. They can get in the way and draw a charge or two, but neither is a real high flyer. Salmons ability to drive in and finish above the rim, can get him back on track and potentially make game three a huge victory for the upstart Bulls.

Foul wise the Celtics are averaging about 20 fouls a game in the first two. Perkins gets about three a game and Glen Davis fouled out in game one. A player is forced to play defense differently when they are in foul trouble, and if the Bulls take the ball to the hoop, it is inevitable that the Celtics will foul more. Plus, the Bulls as a team shoot about 80% from the free throw, so this should work in their favor.

This is also a game that can either revitalize the Celtics, or put a stake in their heart. They know they are not the same team without Kevin Garnett, both physically and spiritually, but the additional loss of Leon Powe really complicates things. Once you get past Mikki Moore and Brian Scalabrine, there is no one left. The Bulls are much deeper in the post and need to pass up the outside shot and take it to the rack to really slay the defending champs.

Nothing would be sweeter for the Bulls, then knocking off the defending champion Celtics, especially when they are basically building for the future. This team finished the season strong and has shown well in the play-offs so far. Add their two number one picks in next year’s draft, a healthy Luol Deng, and they’ll be even better down the road. The play-off experience they are receiving is priceless. Future looks bright in Chicago.
Latest news-----------------Orlando Magic Squash the Boston Celtics 101-82 and end the Celtic's championship hopes taking the quarter final series 4 games to 3. This was another great game 7 in the NBA Playoffs this season.

BOSTON -- Dwight Howard remembers the reaction when he first talked about bringing an NBA championship to Orlando.

"Everybody laughed," the Magic center said after helping Orlando beat the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics 101-82 on Sunday night and advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

"I believe we can win a championship. We're not going to stop going after one until we get it. We have the right team. We have the talent. We have the coaches. It's just on us to go out there and play hard. I have a long way to go, but I'm still hungry.

BASKETBALL AND GRAFFITI AND THE GEOGRAPHY ABOUT IT From the communication, usually illegal, involving the unauthorized marking of public space by an individual or group. Technically the term applies to designs scratched through a layer of paint or plaster, but its meaning has been extended to other markings. Graffiti is widely considered a form of antisocial behaviour performed in order to gain attention or simply for thrills. But it also can be understood as an expressive art form. Derived from the Italian word graffio (“scratch”), graffiti (“incised inscriptions,” plural but often used as singular) has a long history. It has been found in ancient Roman ruins, in the remains of the Mayan city of Tikal in Central America, on rocks in Spain dating to the 16th century, and in medieval English churches. During the 20th century, graffiti in the U.S. and Europe was closely associated with gangs. Graffiti was particularly prominent in major urban centres throughout the world; common targets were subways, billboards, and walls. In the 1990s there emerged a new form of graffiti, known as “tagging,” which entailed the repeated use of a single symbol or series of symbols to mark territory.

WNBA PHOTOS

fast breakThe Phoenix Suns were the most entertaining and efficient team in the NBA during the Mike D'Antoni era. They have single-handedly put scoring back in the NBA game and the Suns Fast Break reflects that philosophy. It is much different than the Carolina Fast Break and serves a different purpose. The Sun Fast Break is the Phoenix offense. There is not much movement and there is not the traditional secondary or transition fast break options. The fast break is defined by 2 things, spacing and philosophy. The Suns' philosophy is to get a shot within the first 7 seconds. That creates a pace that forces players to get up and down the court. This creates defensive breakdowns because the defense cannot recover in time. Spacing is critical as it creates gaps in which the ball can penetrate and either finish at the rim or kick out for a 3. This is not a fast break for the faint of heart. You have to have players that are fearless as shooters, a point guard vision and a coach who can ride the waves.
1 is the point guard. He must get the ball up the floor as quickly as possible. He is always looking to penetrate for a layup or kick out for a shot. 2 and 3 are shooters. They sprint to the corners, outside the 3 point line. 4 is your best shooting frontcourt player. He runs on the opposite side of the ball along the foul lane line.

This article has the is a less formal variant of basketball, played on playgrounds and in gymnasiums across the world. Often only one half of the court is used, but otherwise the rules of the game are very similar to those of basketball. The number of participants in a game, or a run, may range from one defender and one person on offense (known as one on one) to two full teams of five each.
Streetball is a very popular game worldwide, and some cities in the United States have organized streetball programs, such as midnight basketball, as a way for young people to keep out of trouble and avoid problems such as juvenile crime and drugs. Many cities also host their own weekend-long streetball tournaments. Hoop-It-Up and the Houston Rockets' Blacktop Battle are two of the most popular. In recent years, streetball has seen an increase in media exposure through television shows such as ESPN's "Streetball" and "City Slam", as well as traveling exhibitions such as the and1 mixtape different types of basketball including,basketball,streetball,1vs.1vs.1 etc. While the rules of Streetball are generally the same as normal basketball, Streetball places a higher emphasis on one-on-one matchups between the offense and defender. Often the attacker will perform numerous flashy moves while attempting to drive to the basket, including crossovers, jab steps, and other fake-out tricks. Streetball often features spectacular dunks and alley oops, impressive ball handling, and trash talking.
Rules vary widely from court to court. Almost invariably a "call your own foul" rule is in effect, and a player who believes he has been fouled, simply needs to call out "Foul!" or "Ball!", and play will be stopped, with the ball awarded to the fouled player's team. A common misconception is that saying "And 1" is synonymous with calling "foul." It is not. The phrase is commonly employed as a form of trash talk. For example, when a player knows they are going to make a shot and they think they are getting fouled they will say "And 1" to let their defender know, you can't even stop me even when you foul me In reality, and as the rules that follow indicate, there is no such thing as a traditional "And 1" in Streetball.
When a player calls a foul while taking a shot, and makes that shot, the basket counts. The fouled player's team gets the ball back, hence calling "ball" when a foul occurs. This rule is designed to have players call as few fouls as possible ensuring speedier game play and shorter waiting times for next. Also, the rule helps to ensure that nobody gets hurt. As a player can not foul-out in Streetball and since the duration of the game is dictated by the score, teams will often employ the intentional foul as a last resort on defense. If defensive players had to concern themselves with fouling the offensive player hard enough so that there was no chance they could make a shot it would certainly lead to unnecessary injury and probably a couple extra fights on the court. It goes without saying, calling fouls in Streetball is disfavored. The etiquette of what rightly constitutes a foul, as well as the permissible amount of protestation against such a call, are the products of individual groups, and of the seriousness of a particular game. Another common variation to the contest is the "skunk" rule. This merely means that if a player reaches a certain point without the other player scoring, the game is over. The skunk rule is often used at the score 7 to 0.
A common feature to Streetball is the 'pick up game'. To participate in most streetball games across the world one simply goes to an outdoor court where people are playing, indicate a wish to participate, and once all the players who were at the court before you have played you will get to pick your team out of the players available and play a game. Many games play up to 7, 11, 15 or 21 points with all baskets counting as one point (sometimes shots beyond the 3 point arc count as 2 points). Players often play 'win by 2' which, as in tennis, means that the team has to win by a margin of at least 2 points. Sometimes a local "dead end" limit applies; for instance a game may be played to 7, win by 2, with a 9 point dead end, which would mean scores of 7-5, 8-6, 9-7, or 9-8, would all be final; while with scores of 7-6 or 8-7, play would continue. The most common streetball game is 3 on 3 played half court though often 5 on 5 full court can be found.
Sometimes in a half-court game, a "make it, take it" rule is followed. This means that if a team scores, they get the ball again on offense. So one team could end up never getting the ball on offense if the "winners" score on every possession. Full court basketball is not played with these rules. But in most instances, the winning team gets to choose which basketball and usually which direction (which basket) they get to use.
An unusual streetball feature is having an "MC" call the game. The MC is on the court during the game and is often very close to the players (but makes an effort to not interfere with the game) and uses a microphone to provide game commentary for the fans.

this next article is about what kind of land pieces the sport basketball.
